Lumber sizes: nominal vs actual

What a board is called and what it measures: 1× and 2× dimensional lumber, posts, and the actual thickness of plywood, MDF and drywall, in inches and millimeters.

Plywood is usually a little under its nominal thickness; MDF and drywall are true to size. Measure the stock you have before you set a dado or a reveal.
